We Believe in the Gift of Thumbs

Those who work in social media are concerned with best practices.  They want to do the best things they can so that their posts on social media get as much engagement as possible.  Engagement are the various ways that people interact with a post on social media.  This means that YOU have an impact on their success!

Types of engagement vary by social platform.  Click on a platform's name to learn more about each platform and how the church uses it.

Types of Engagement:
Facebook: Likes, Comments, Shares
Twitter: Favorites, Replies, Retweets
Google+: +1s, Comments, Shares
Instagram: Likes, Comments
Pinterest: Likes, Comments, Pins
YouTube: Likes, Comments, Views
Tumblr: Likes, Comments, Reblog

Many of us are on the consumer side of this; we're not creating the content, we're just enjoying it!  So best practices for a social media consumer are simple: engage the content that you enjoy the most! The power is in your hands, or as we like to say here, in your thumbs!  There are lots of good consequences that come from putting your stamp of approval on a social media post by engaging with it.

1. Trending Topics
The more engagement a post gets, the more likely it is to be recommended to others by the social media platform.  This means that people who would not normally see the post, become more likely to see it, simply because it is popular.

2. More Goodness
The more positive, uplifting content you engage, the more positive, uplifting content you will see when you are using social media.  Social media platforms are designed to help content reach the right audience.  So when you engage content it sends a signal the platform what you want to see more of that content.

3. Higher Search Rankings
Engaging content makes gives credibility to the organization that creates the content.  Have you ever heard of SEO?  It stands for Search Engine Optimization.  This means that when you search on a site like Google, Google's goal is to give you exactly what you're looking for.  Being active on social media plays a role in where Google ranks you when it comes to particular subjects.  So when you engage content it shows Google that people know what they're talking about.  This means when people are trying to learn about the church, they will find information from accurate sources.

The good news is you don't have to comment on or share every post out there.  Engaging can be as simple as clicking or tapping a button.  So next time you see something that the church puts out, like it.  It may take an extra second of your time, but it is such an easy way to help hasten the work.  You never know who you might help reach.
